A former city councillor is guilty of child sex crimes. Abdul-Majid Rahman denied the charges. He denied assaulting a girl under thirteen and also denied indecent assault of a girl under fourteen. A jury found him guilty at Cardiff Crown Court on Wednesday, February 18.

The jury could not decide on another charge involving inciting a girl sexually, who was under thirteen again. Rahman also denied this charge, and this count was then discharged. Rahman is thirty-six years old and lives on Bryn Road.

His sentencing is on March 18, 2025, and he remains in custody now. Rahman used to be a councillor representing Victoria ward. He served from 2012 until he resigned in October 2021, citing “personal reasons.”

He belonged to Welsh Labour and served on Newport City Council. Rahman received prison time in June 2022, getting three years and eight months for child pornography. He possessed and shared indecent images on Corporation Road.

Newport City Council made a statement “condemning” such behavior, noting Rahman resigned in October 2021. The charges are unrelated to his role then. The council works with the police to tackle exploitation and abuse in all forms. Welsh Labour has been asked for comment.
