Jason Tan, a former UFC fighter, runs the academy. They are in Vulcan Street. The council made a new parking zone; businesses need permits now.
The council announced this last week. It affects 4,000 residents and impacts 3,000 businesses, too. The parking zone is controversial.
Businesses are very upset. Parking will always be restricted, not only during events, but almost all the time.
Tan says most members drive there and believes it affects them a lot. He says public transport isn’t good enough because stations are far away.
He understands event day restrictions but doesn’t get year-round rules. He got the notice a week before it started.
Tan says his business could suffer. Simon Magner is also a coach there and says parents drop off kids, waiting in their cars.
Parents cannot do that anymore. Kids travel from all over the city. They want a safe environment for women; walking at night could be unsafe.
Magner thinks it will hurt their business badly. The council says it is an experiment, watching the impact closely and might change things later.
The council consulted about this in 2022, but some businesses opened after that. The council is listening to concerns; it’s an “Experimental Traffic Order.”
It starts soon and runs for 18 months; the council can change it if needed. Though permits are limited to ten, they will consider more.
