A successful funding drive ensures vital expansion and protection of the Rainton Meadows wildlife reserve.

The Trust needed funds to get a larger grant. They sought a £540,000 grant from the Biffa Award, and a donor bought the land temporarily. This gave the Trust time to raise enough money. The Biffa Award approved the grant, and the Trust should own the land by March.
Emily Routledge thanked everyone for their support. The land purchase protects Rainton Meadows and will improve habitats for birds like curlew. Rachel Maidment said they support the land purchase, as Biffa Award funds projects for wildlife and communities. People value and want to protect local wild areas.
Rainton Meadows was once an open-cast mine, changing into a nature reserve in 1996. The Trust, UK Coal, and Sunderland worked together. The land can now greatly help nature recover. The UK has lost much grassland recently. They will introduce new plant species and create wetlands, planting hedges. New viewing areas will be built for the public, and a local resident is glad about the expansion.
