Hey, guess what? They approved the plan to knock down The Galleries! It took years, but it’s finally happening. They are going to construct 450 new homes there. New shops and restaurants are included too. The project will connect Castle Park and Broadmead better.

The Galleries shopping center opened in 1991. Now, developer Deeley Freed has the green light, as Bristol City Council approved their plans. This change will significantly impact our city center. Broadmead will look and feel quite different soon.

The tallest building will have 23 stories and you will be able to spot it from far away. They plan to add 750 student rooms. Plus, we are getting more green spaces!

The Broadmead Medical Centre will also be relocated, as will a Bristol Eye Hospital assessment clinic. Both are currently inside The Galleries. The developers will give £1.3 million to the NHS, which will help with the move.

Good news! Ninety of the 450 homes are “affordable.” Plans also show a hotel and a music venue will be built.

The Galleries has been a big part of Bristol’s history. Retail has been on the site for a long time. For example, a Co-op department store opened there in 1962.

Over the years, they made changes inside the mall. TK Maxx expanded back in the 2000s. Then, in 2011, the food court moved downstairs. In 2013, they spent £1.5 million on entrance updates.

Right now, several shops stand empty in The Galleries. Cabot Circus, which opened in 2008, is more popular. So, this redevelopment might be its last. The Galleries will still be remembered, though.
