Children painted pebbles for the penguins’ nests, bringing joy and connection to nature during breeding season.

Zoo staff visit the hospital each week, doing fun activities with the children. These activities help kids feel closer to nature itself. Hospital patients enjoy watching the penguins online, using live webcams at the zoo.
Now, they can watch penguins build nests. The penguins will use these painted pebbles. RZSS folks want more people to connect with animals, especially those facing challenges, including the children the Edinburgh charity supports.
Zoos offer families a place to spend time together, providing a break from life’s pressures. The zoo values all visitors and supporters, making this work possible.
This year, a young person named Sophie helped put the first pebbles into the penguin area at the zoo. She is also supported by the hospital charity.
Roslyn Neely runs the Edinburgh Children’s Hospital Charity and thinks kids should still connect with nature, even when in the hospital. RZSS provides a nice distraction for families during hard times, letting them focus on their love of animals. The charity is grateful for the zoo’s meaningful activities, which really help children and families.
