Ryan O’Donnell, 37, jailed for 44 months after police found explosives and child abuse images at his Edinburgh home.

Police found mixed powders, including potassium nitrate, at his home. They also discovered equipment for making explosives. This occurred after police went to a Loanhead property.
The police went to Mayburn Avenue on April 19, 2024. They shut down the street for safety, and a bomb disposal unit assisted the officers.
Detectives seized O’Donnell’s computers and checked for terror links. Instead, they found many child abuse images; he had nearly 1500 such images.
O’Donnell claimed he made fireworks and enjoyed using the chemicals. However, police said those chemicals were very dangerous and could have greatly harmed others.
Making explosives without a license is illegal and risks public safety, even without intent. He will also face consequences for the images.
O’Donnell appeared via video from jail. His lawyer stated he has alcohol problems, and experts are checking him for autism in prison. He knew prison was likely.
Lady Poole sentenced him to prison for 44 months. He must be supervised for 12 months after release, as he risked people and property making fireworks.
She stated that child pornography exploits children and the court takes these crimes seriously. She put O’Donnell on the Sex Offenders Register, which will last for ten years.
