Subway in Tower Hamlets can stay open until 1 AM after council approval, citing minimal noise from student customers.

The council looked at their application. This Subway on Mile End Road opened four months prior, with initial hours from 8 AM to 11 PM daily. The Licensing Sub-Committee had a meeting last Tuesday.
Asan Abdul Kadir Shahid spoke for Subway, saying they had no complaints. Deliveries and litter haven’t been issues, and he feels they operate responsibly within the community.
However, a local priest objected to the plan believing it could create a public nuisance. The church wanted Subway to close by midnight, fearing noise from late customers and drivers.
Someone asked about noise affecting residents upstairs. Mr. Shahid explained they make little noise, mentioning a nearby KFC with flats above that has no reported issues. He emphasized most Subway clients are quiet students.
The committee considered the busy location, noting it’s a main road, active day and night. They felt noise impact should be less severe there. Mr. Shahid said delivery orders stop before closing, clarifying they would operate as before, if approved.
After their meeting, the committee discussed it privately. They unanimously approved Subway’s request but with rules. Now, Subway is open 8 AM to 1 AM daily, with late-night food available 11 PM to 1 AM.
