A £4.4 million grant will transform Glasgow’s East End with a new park and sports centre at the historic Meat Market site.

East End Park and Sports Centre Project Receives Funding Boost
The park features trees and rain gardens for everyone. It will include a cycle path. The old shed will become a sports center offering a bar and bistro.
Homes now stand on the Meat Market site. The site sat vacant back in the 1990s. This was part of a masterplan.
Ruairi Kelly spoke at a council meeting. He said the sheds will become flexible, hosting sports, a bar, and events. Small businesses are going to get support.
Kelly shared the site will have a new park linking Bellgrove and Melbourne Streets. Trees and gardens will enhance this route.
City Administration approved the funds yesterday. The grant, amounting to £4.486 million, goes to the Meat Market group. This sum is part of a larger £11.8 million package.
Councillors Redmond, O’Lone, and Hepburn welcomed the investment with happiness. Councillor O’Lone shared it is very welcome and will transform the area greatly, as housing is already changing it.
Councillor Redmond thanked the involved staff, saying they are turning housing into community.
Councillor Hepburn spoke of the site’s “heritage” and added, “It has been pretty incredible.” The Meat Market group sought planning permission last year, showing potential designs.
