James Mullen, drunk, attacked Anton Martin with a bottle in Edinburgh, resulting in serious injuries during city centre fight.

A fight started, and Mullen held Mr. Martin against a window. He hit Mr. Martin’s head and body, before smashing a bottle on Mr. Martin’s head. Mr. Martin fell down, but Mullen kept punching him.
Mullen, a father of two, was out on bail and said he barely remembered the event because it happened long ago and he was very drunk.
Mullen admitted to assault causing severe injury on January 23. He appeared in court on February 25 for sentencing, but the sheriff wasn’t happy because this was not his first serious assault.
The sheriff said Martin’s injuries could have been terrible. She almost sent Mullen to jail; instead, he got three years of supervision, plus 180 hours of unpaid work to finish in 18 months.
Mullen recalled punching Mr. Martin, knowing Mr. Martin fell, and remembering having a bottle. But, he said the rest was unclear, knowing he shouldn’t have been violent or gotten involved.
Mullen admitted his behavior was wrong, noting that he got four years in prison back in 2014. He had more convictions since 2021, including eight new convictions, including serious assaults and abuse.
His past includes assaulting a police officer and a doctor during football violence. The sheriff warned Mullen about breaking the rules, stating he will go to jail if he does.
