A man riding an e-scooter drunk with two passengers was caught swerving. He’s now banned from driving and must pay a fine.

Police wanted to give advice and they stopped the rider, Sonny McKeag. He had clearly been drinking alcohol. Sonny McKeag is 20 years old and lives on Sedley Taylor Road.
His breath test showed 70 microgrammes of alcohol which later rose to 82. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes. On February 27, McKeag went to court where he admitted to drunk driving.
He lost his driving privileges for a year and must also pay a £266 fine. An officer, PC Sam Thomas, spoke about e-scooters, explaining that the law treats them like motor vehicles. Rules apply when used on roads and it’s illegal to ride drunk.
Riding with two people while drunk is dangerous and McKeag’s actions had consequences. He cannot drive for a year now, the officer said. You can only use e-scooters on roads legally if rented; these are like council-run programs such as VOI.
Riders need a license and insurance, and it’s illegal to use your own scooter on roads. The law considers e-scooters as motor vehicles, so drink and drug rules apply to them. Report drunk or drugged driving at 0800 032 0845.
