His name is Andrew Sunman, he’s 34. He admitted to having drugs and planning to sell them. The police also found amphetamine on him, and the court heard some odd things.
He wanted to get arrested on purpose! He thought jail would help him get clean. He wanted a “reset,” he said in court.
Police saw Sunman on a bike in Hull, making drug deals with people. This happened after a “stop and search.” He had heroin, crack, and amphetamine.
He said he sold drugs since April of last year to pay off that debt. Others were pressuring him to sell and his initial £200 debt grew to over £1,000. They made threats.
Police found £360 on him, and his phone had drug messages. The amphetamine was for him, worth £70. He had a record with many shoplifting charges and two short prison sentences before. This was his first drug charge.
His lawyer said he was doing better lately. He had a full-time job and was improving and the lawyer said he was motivated.
The judge knew he wanted to get clean in jail. He’d been working with drug and alcohol services. His recent drug tests even came back negative.
Sunman got no jail time this time. He got a two-year suspended sentence and has to do unpaid work and rehab. He also must pay £150. Police will keep the £360 they seized.
