A speeding driver, under suspicion of drug use, is jailed for causing the death of a man innocently crossing the road.

Gelen was speeding on April 9, 2023, on St Neots Road. Mills was crossing the road around 9 pm when Gelen’s car hit him. Mills sadly died right at the scene; Gelen drove a white Skoda Octavia. Police tested Gelen, and it showed cannabis.
The police arrested Gelen that same night, suspecting dangerous driving and drug use. His trial occurred November 19, 2024. Blood tests showed he was below the drug limit, but his car had a faulty braking system.
Gelen ignored a warning light that indicated an ABS problem. The court sentenced Gelen Wednesday to three and a half years for causing death by dangerous driving, after the jury found him guilty.
Gelen also received a driving ban lasting five years and nine months. DC Paddy Reeve spoke about the case, noting that Gelen sped in a residential area, despite road signs attempting to reduce speed.
Gelen’s driving caused Mr. Mills’ death while Mills was simply crossing the street. Police proved Gelen’s speed was key, as he could have stopped at 30 mph, and slower speed would have avoided the crash.
This case reminds people to drive safely and at the right speed for each road. Gelen’s actions killed an innocent person. Police send thoughts to Mr. Mills’ family and hope the sentence gives them some peace.
