Avoid walking between adult animals and their young. It’s illegal to let your dog worry farm animals. This applies to private land or grazing land. Convicted offenders face prosecution in England and Wales. The maximum fine is £1,000; this is in addition to costs and compensation.
Police can seize dogs worrying livestock if the owner is unknown. They must return the dog if the owner turns up. That is the current law.
Last year, dogs killed 15 sheep. The owner was a veterinary nurse. The dogs injured 13 more in Derbyshire. The court fined Evie Watson £750. This covered a fine, legal costs, and a surcharge.
