A coroner started an inquest about David Pelly’s death. He was from Penwith and a skilled diver. The inquest began at Exeter County Hall on February 14. Deborah Archer said David lived in Tremar Coombe, Liskeard.

David Pelly sadly died on February 11, 2025. He was 72 years old and married. He also owned a dive shop. David went to Derriford Hospital for an operation. Doctors planned it in two parts.

He bled a lot during the first part. Doctors removed his spleen. He then went to the Intensive Care ward. They delayed the second operation by two days; it was set for Friday, February 15.

He breathed in fluid when given anesthesia. The second operation could not happen then. David got sick and worsened. He passed away on February 11, 2025. His death was due to aspiration pneumonitis. Post-operative upper bowel ileus was also a cause. Adenoma carcinoma oesophagus contributed as well.

Sandford and Down Dive Shop’s website mentioned David. It said he had 50+ years in diving. He started as an offshore diver in the North Sea. He gained valued knowledge there. People knew Dave for safety and professionalism. He knew dive equipment well.

The team trusted him and his experience. The shop posted a tribute on Facebook. They said goodbye to a special man on February 11. The ocean was his home. His kindness and love of diving will live on. His spirit remains in stories and adventures.

The post said, rest easy, Dave. May the waters be clear for you. May you dive in peace forever. Many people shared kind words about David. Divers in the South West and beyond remembered him. One person called him a true gentleman and a legend in local diving. Another said he was one of the kindest people ever. Someone else said he helped divers reach their potential.

Ms. Archer stopped the hearing for now. A full inquest will happen later.
