Searches happened for weeks. Officers made a terrible discovery. It was at the weekend. The officers found the students’ bodies. The bodies were in a car’s boot. This was near San Jose Miahuatlan.
Nine students were dismembered. They were by the road. A “bag of hands” was also there. The students included four women and five men. They were aged 19 to 30.
The car was abandoned on a rural road between Puebla and Oaxaca. This is about 175 miles from Mexico City. Initial reports showed torture and bullet wounds.
The students went missing last month. Angie Lizeth, who was 29, was one of them. Other victims are Brenda Mariel, 19, and Jacqueline Ailet, 23. Noemi Yamileth, 28, and Lesly Noya Trejo, 21, also died. Raul Emmanuel, 28, Ruben Antonio, and Rolando Armando were also victims. They came from Tlaxcala.
Police are investigating. They want to identify the ninth victim. They found eight pairs of hands that were severed, and two more hands were in the car.
The group was traveling to the beach before they went missing. The last sighting was February 24. CCTV showed their car on the Atlixcayotl highway near Atlixco. That town is 90 miles from where they found the bodies.
Officers have no suspects yet. The Attorney General’s Office is helping. They are working with colleagues in other states and will investigate the case together.
An official, Idamis Pastor Betancourt, spoke at a press conference. He said he had no information to share. Investigations are ongoing, and details are confidential for now. More will come later.
Mexico’s murder rate keeps rising. Thirty thousand people died in 2023. It was the most violent year recently. Most killings relate to drugs.
