A family in Devon was stunned when their hen laid a giant 200g egg, four times bigger than usual, with an egg inside!
Elsie Griffin, age nine, was amazed. She found the huge egg, like the size of a palm. Normal eggs weigh about 50g. Gail’s egg was truly jumbo size.
Rob, her dad, cracked it open. They found another shell inside! The family took pictures and video.
Rob said Elsie’s sister, Ruby, owns Gail. Ruby is twelve. Gail lives with another chicken, Dorothy. Gail is normal and never did this before. The family has had her a little over a year.
A photo shows Gail’s big egg. It’s next to her normal egg. The big egg almost falls out of the egg holder.
Rob said they opened it last night. It contained an egg inside an egg. The family sounds surprised and a little grossed out.
Gail’s egg is impressive, however it’s not a record breaker. The biggest egg came from a USA chicken. It weighed 454g.
Older hens usually lay bigger eggs. Chickens live five to ten years. Gail is only sixteen months old. This makes her egg even more special.
