A councilor thinks Torridge could become a UK “Melbourne.” This means more street art and murals, potentially helping North Devon and Torridge become arts hubs during government changes.

Phil Parker spoke about art in Torridge, noting many artists are hidden and that while documents show ambition, art lacks sufficient local support.

Councillors heard about important art places like The Burton Art Gallery and The Plough Arts Centre, both of which receive funding, though funding for arts and marketing is generally low. The area, Parker argued, could develop into something like Cornwall’s Newlyn School.

With devolution coming, Parker said Northern Devon could lose out and asked how they could stand out, emphasizing that people shouldn’t suffer due to these changes.

Rural councils worry about being taken over by bigger cities like Exeter. Parker highlighted that creative industries earn billions, and Northern Devon needs to participate more effectively.

Artmakers supports many artists, most of whom are located in Torridge and are part of the New Atlantic Wave, a large art group. The organization, like The Burton and The Plough, relies on volunteers for its operation.

The Burton has attracted many visitors and is a leading ceramics center, working with galleries such as Tate. It also offers clubs, visits, and workshops.

One councillor said The Burton is underappreciated, given its valuable free exhibits. The Plough, similarly, has hosted numerous events and helped many young people.

The Plough provides outreach hubs to bring art to rural areas. Despite receiving council funds, ticket sales are down, and high energy costs mean funds will eventually run out; volunteers help mitigate expenses.

The Plough is planning renovations that include solar panels to generate its own power and is currently fundraising to support these improvements.

The Plough aims to become a platform for showcasing new talent, with more comedy programming planned. They need better public transport options, as buses do not run late at night.

Councillors want to market the area’s potential and develop a clear identity for creativity. One councillor specifically suggested street art to create a “mini-Melbourne” in Torridge.
