Brailsford housing plan denied after drainage concerns raised by councilors and locals fearing increased flooding risks.

The Derbyshire Dales council voted against the plan in a close five to four vote. Officials had wanted the council to approve it, and Derbyshire County Council had no objections.
Councillors worried about flooding and drainage, seeking more clarity on those issues. A decision had been delayed in December for more information.
John Whitby, a Labour MP, opposed the plan, saying it risked local people and property. He had also spoken against it in December.
He noted increased housing targets from the government, arguing that developers unfairly chase greenfield sites while brownfield sites are not being developed.
Whitby said the plan lacked affordable housing, meaning local people wouldn’t benefit. He wants to stop developers exploiting councils.
Pat Laughlin, the Parish Council chair, also opposed the project. She stated it wouldn’t help the area, or boost the economy or local services.
Laughlin believes construction will harm residents and destroy the village. Furthermore, residents feel their concerns are being ignored.
Roger Wilkinson, a resident, cited strained local services, including an already overcrowded school. He said more homes would add many new pupils, while the local medical center is also struggling.
Residents believe flooding will get worse, and that many questions remain unanswered. They cited issues with old drainage records, pointing out that the water company had no record of some of the drainage.
David Hough, a representative for Gladman, disagreed, saying drainage would actually improve. He claimed the project would benefit Brailsford.
Councillor Helen Froggatt criticized housing targets, fearing the area is turning into concrete. Councillor Dermot Murphy also opposed approval.
David Burton, the meeting chair, felt pressured. Councillor Stuart Lees cited uncertain drainage details, ultimately leading to the plan’s rejection.
