An artist created a waterfall in Derby’s center. He is saddened by its lack of use now. William Pye is ready to support a campaign. The goal is to get it running again.

William designed the sculpture in the 1990s. He won a competition to do so and collaborated with artist Terry Pawson. The project was very exciting for him.

He recalls issues with Derby City Council and their numerous regulations. They built the cascade over old toilets. The area below contains pumps and equipment.

He was inspired by the fountains of the Italian Villa d’Este and wanted people to walk behind the water. Interaction was an important design aspect that let people do more than just look.

William has created sculptures worldwide, including works at Salisbury Cathedral and Gatwick Airport. He was never invited back to see the cascade, but admits he should visit soon.

Water became key to his work from the 1980s on. He finds its features extraordinary and is fascinated by hydrostatics. He enjoys manipulating them in gardens and public spaces.

Many Derby people have fond memories of it. They remember running behind the waterfall as kids. They also watched while parents and grandparents looked on.

The city council said they have no plans to restart it, and it has been off since 2019. William felt honored that people liked his work and didn’t know the impact it had.

He finds its prolonged closure sad. The city was proud to build it, yet he does not understand their inaction. He thinks the upkeep costs cannot be very high.

William wants to help campaigns to revive it. He finds the cost excuse unconvincing, claiming running a pump is not very expensive. In his opinion, the benefits outweigh the cost.

The council plans a “cultural heart” in the area, but will keep the waterfall off. Running and maintaining it are too costly. They will consult the artist on the future.

People in Derby shared their thoughts. One woman took grandchildren to the waterfall and noted they cannot even afford water in the town center.

A man recalled playing there as a child, but doesn’t know about the involved costs. He would like it reopened, but it is not a priority; however, it would add life to the town.
