Derby plans to spend money on a new depot. The council needs more space than its current site offers. The project appears in a new financial report. It lists major plans for 2025/26 or later.

Other big projects are also planned by the council, including a new crematorium and remodeling the Guildhall Theatre. They will complete the Eastern Gateway project soon too.

The city council parks many vehicles at its depot. These vehicles include bin lorries and road maintenance vehicles.

The council reviewed its depot facilities last year, following a political dispute involving a gully cleansing lorry. Some councillors were not happy with a cabinet member, whose answer concerned the lorry’s purchase.

The purchase was paused due to depot space issues. A report mentions a “new depot” as a major project, and will have extra highways capacity.

Councillor Onuoha said the depot helps with food waste pickup, and suggests it can start next year. The council approved these plans last year, approving £2 million for the food waste scheme to buys waste caddies and new bin lorries.

Onuoha looks forward to the new crematorium and is also excited about the new depot. He says that it lets them remove food waste and this investment helps them serve residents.

The Local Democracy Reporting Service inquired about depot costs, also asking about when and where it might operate. A council person said they are exploring options to increase vehicle storage.

New rules require weekly food waste pickup, and they expect more funding for road repairs. The council person explained that more vehicles are needed, along with more personnel and storage space. The current depot cannot handle this.

Simon Bacon, a local Derby resident of Normanton, started the questions regarding the gully cleaner purchase. He thinks the new depot is positive. Bacon is happy they are expanding equipment storage, believes there is no capacity limit, and wants the gully cleaner lorry as soon as possible.
