The RSPCA and Surrey Fire rescued three deer in February. The animals got into trouble and needed help.

The first rescue happened on February 5th. A deer was caught in a metal gate in Guildford. A person saw it struggling at a university property and called the RSPCA for help.

The RSPCA inspector needed the fire service. Firefighters used tools to open the gate, and the inspector checked the deer and freed it. She released it in a nearby field; the deer was not injured. Deer can get very stressed when trapped.

Stress can cause muscle breakdown. Sometimes, it’s kinder to euthanize them to prevent a painful death. This deer was safely released.

On February 26th, the RSPCA needed the fire service again, because two deer were stuck at a school near Caterham. The two deer were tangled together. Their antlers were entwined after fighting. They also had ropes and twigs around them, and were very stressed.

The RSPCA inspector said the deer fought, then rope tangled their antlers. It was too dangerous to approach them, so the fire service’s rescue unit helped. They used shields to hold the deer, and firefighters cut them free. The deer were unharmed, were released there, and checked on after.

The RSPCA advises people to stay safe. Only rescue an animal if it’s safe to do so. If you see a trapped animal, call the RSPCA; the emergency line is 0300 1234 999.
