Last January, McDonald’s plan became public, raising concerns among residents and businesses who felt fast food would hurt the area’s vibe. Three years before, Croydon rejected McDonald’s plan for a takeaway on a fancy street.
Locals felt McDonald’s clashed with existing shops and restaurants. Their concerns also included potential traffic and trash issues and how it might impact the environment. Poundland’s lease is ending at 62 Westow Street.
Poundland is not renewing its lease, though the exact closing date is unannounced. Nando’s application seems better to many residents, a view shared by Councillor Claire Bonham.
Bonham wants to know what residents think and welcomes their views on this new application. She spoke to the Local Democracy Reporting Service, noting that Poundland helps people save money.
Nando’s plan is considered better than McDonald’s old plan, which included a takeaway-only restaurant that Bonham supported the withdrawal of. She aims to boost foot traffic for all businesses.
Bonham will analyze the proposals closely and encourages residents to share their thoughts by emailing her or contacting her at Croydon Town Hall. She asks people to let her know their views.
