A 45-year-old man died after being restrained by police in Croydon following reports of assault and a medical emergency.

Police restrained him due to his resistance. Officers entered a property following a report of assault where a kid was reported hurt on High Street in Croydon around 1:30 this morning.
An ambulance transported the man, during which he became seriously unwell. Despite paramedics transferring him to a hospital, he sadly died later. His family has been informed of his death.
The Met’s standards department is aware and has referred the incident to police conduct authorities. This is standard procedure following a death involving police, and the probe does not imply officer wrongdoing.
Commander Andy Brittain is overseeing the response, acknowledging the difficult situation officers faced and extending thoughts to the family, promising full support. He recognizes the community’s need for reassurance, which the IOPC investigation aims to address.
Commander Brittain also acknowledged the incident’s impact on the officers who responded to a child’s emergency, only to encounter a very tough scene. No officer desires an incident like this, and the police will receive the support they need.
