Tributes pour in for Stefan Nelson-Ewen, a nurse found dead in his home on Christmas Eve. Friends organize funeral.

A suspected brain aneurysm caused his death. He had reportedly been out for drinks in Crosby Village before heading home. His workmates notified the authorities when Stefan didn’t appear at work.
Many people posted heartfelt condolences on Facebook. Friends expressed their sadness and grief online, describing him as a kind person who didn’t deserve such a fate. Co-workers remembered him fondly too.
Police looked for his next of kin, but only a distant cousin could be found. Friends and colleagues, who worked with him at Southport and Formby District General Hospital where he was a nurse, stepped up and organized his funeral together.
Chris Johns, the Crows Nest’s assistant manager in Crosby, said Stefan frequented the Crows Nest and the Birkey. Chris knew Stefan for fifteen years, meeting him when Chris worked at the Birkey and Stefan would visit for drinks.
Chris described Stefan as an “enigma.” Stefan was likely born in Canada, but his parents then moved to England. People knew Stefan for a long time, but they didn’t really know much about his past. He was easy to talk to and a bit eccentric, often performing card tricks at the bar as he loved performing magic tricks.
Stefan enjoyed heavy metal music and dressed in leather boots with a chain. Chris’ pub is usually frequented by older men, so Stefan’s appearance stood out there. Chris got a call on Christmas Eve and learned Stefan had been found dead, leaving him shocked by the news.
Stefan’s friends are planning his funeral, fearing he wouldn’t get a proper one otherwise. Chris created a GoFundMe page to raise money for Stefan’s funeral, with any remaining funds going to the hospital trust.
