Crime map reveals the most dangerous areas, with one Yorkshire area among the worst in England and Wales based on crime rates.

Met Police had the most, with 944,000 reports. West Midlands Police followed with 321,000. West Yorkshire Police recorded 278,000 crimes.
Crime rates let us compare different areas easily. They show crimes per 1,000 residents. Middlesbrough has Yorkshire’s highest crime rate, ranking third overall in England and Wales. Its rate is 166.2 per 1,000 people, making it the most dangerous place outside London.
Doncaster ranks second in Yorkshire and eleventh overall, with a crime rate of 127.2. Leeds is next, ranking sixteenth with a crime rate of 125.2 per 1,000. Bradford comes in fourth for Yorkshire and seventeenth overall, having 123.3 crimes per 1,000 people.
North Yorkshire has Yorkshire’s lowest crime rate, ranking 279th overall. Its rate is 50.5 per 1,000 people. East Yorkshire ranks second best in the region, 252nd overall, with a crime rate of 55.7.
Westminster, London, has the highest crime rate at 434 crimes per 1,000 people, almost one crime for every two people! Camden has the next highest rate, recording 189 crimes per 1,000 people. Westminster’s high rate might be due to tourism, with thefts being three times higher there.
Manchester has the highest rate outside London, with 158 crimes per 1,000 people. Blackpool and Hartlepool follow Middlesbrough, with rates of 155 and 141 respectively.
Police data shows that homicides decreased slightly, but knife offenses rose by four percent. Firearm offenses increased by nineteen percent. Robbery also saw an increase of four percent, and shoplifting went up by twenty-three percent.
A survey estimated around 9.5 million crimes occurred in England and Wales in the period ending September 2024. This includes theft, fraud and violence. That’s about a million more crimes than last year, driven quite a bit by fraud, which accounted for a nineteen percent rise.
The survey also collected people’s experiences. Around 4.4 million people faced some form of harassment. Domestic abuse affected about 2.2 million people. Around 1.6 million people were stalked, and sexual assault impacted about 1.0 million people.
