Coventry residents worry library moves could hurt children. They think organized crime might target them. Some people needing services could get turned away.

People are upset about relocating four libraries: Holbrooks, Coundon, Canley, and Bell Green. Locals fear losing staff and resources in shared spaces, such as family hubs, dementia hubs, and leisure centers.

At a council meeting, residents voiced strong opposition. Dan Sabin said the dementia hub doesn’t want the library because its purpose differs greatly. He stated that libraries should welcome everyone.

Residents expressed concern that some people might be turned away if a hub patient needs attention. Sabin argued that the Holbrooks area needs its library and believes reading allows people to learn, emphasizing that knowledge is power and the people of Holbrooks need a library for advancement.

Sarah Davis, of Save Coventry Libraries, raised concerns that moving Canley library, a “safe place” for vulnerable children, could expose them to crime due to its proximity to the Excel Centre. She said the council must protect these children and that the library must stay where it is.

Davis stated Bell Green has a “lifetime guarantee” and should remain in its building, fully staffed. She added that moving it because of antisocial behavior is ironic, as the new location is also in Riley Square. She criticized the council’s spending on “vanity projects,” suggesting that using that money and asking for funds could help.

A council officer responded, stating they heard the feedback and will use it, planning to detail the plans’ impact. She claimed the shift aims to integrate services and reduce council buildings, making support more accessible.

Councillors approved this “One Coventry model” last year, estimating savings of £3 to 4 million each year. They have not yet made a final library decision.
