Coventry’s Godiva fest faced a £200k deficit. Councillor demands action amid sales drops and cost hikes.

Councillor Ridley said the festival has been running at a loss for several years. He asked for reassurance at a meeting, mentioning both falling sales and rising costs. The Finance Director, Barry Hastie, responded to the concerns, stating that fewer people attended last year while the event’s costs increased.
Bad weather and a soccer game may have deterred attendees. The council explained the deficit to the news stating festival costs have greatly increased. Many festivals face cancellation risks now and more income is needed to run the Godiva event. Last year’s income fell short of expectations.
The council will cut £300,000 in funding this year. Higher ticket prices could help cover the gap, and outside funding and sponsorships are also options. They haven’t announced ticket prices or performers yet, but the festival dates were recently revealed.
The council says Godiva festival will still happen. Councillor Thomas defended the festival’s importance, believing it brings visitors to Coventry and supports new musical talent. Councillor Khan agreed with her points.
Council Leader Duggins wants the festival to continue. Councillor Ridley expressed concern about finances and wants the council to make the festival sustainable, remembering it as the UK’s largest free festival.
