Council adds £330k to Godiva Festival budget amid library changes. Decision balances city events with cost-saving plans.

The £330k is part of a £400k city event spend, following extra government funding. The festival will be the same quality, with the council covering any shortfall this year. Last year’s festival overspent by £200k due to low ticket sales and higher costs.
Councillors agreed to cut £300k yearly in 2025 as part of a £30 million savings plan. Higher ticket prices might replace council money, or they could seek outside funding. The council addressed questions about the funding and alternative costs.
Councillor Duggins said they must look at things again, stating events are being planned. He pointed out the festival was once free, and tickets are affordable now. He wants to make sure people can afford it.
Councillor Brown said the festival costs over £1 million, and the council has reduced its funding yearly. He wants to seek out more sponsorship as much of the audience comes from Coventry. He wants to keep the event going and will see if costs can be cut.
The council was asked about library cuts and the festival. The plan moves four libraries in the city, sharing buildings with other services. People signed petitions to save the libraries. Councillor Duggins said it’s about balance and he does not want the festival canceled.
He stated library plans use resources best and stressed the libraries are moved, not closed. It’s about service delivery, not buildings, and he expects value for money always. People have concerns about changes, and he needs to consider those too. The council must spend money wisely.
Councillor Brown said they look after land and buildings and have a duty to use those wisely. Changes improve service delivery, he added. They must look at processes and resources, as people change with changing needs. It is good to review things often, he stated.
