Major roadworks for the A46 Walsgrave junction upgrade in Coventry may cause significant travel disruptions.

Imagine narrow lanes and a 40mph limit. Also anticipate some closures on the dual carriageway. This connects Coventry to the M6 and M69. Expect detours through residential areas sometimes, especially at night or weekends.
National Highways wants a new junction and a link road on the A46. It is part of the eastern bypass. They claim this will ease traffic and journeys should become faster and safer.
The government is reviewing these plans now. If approved, work may start in autumn 2026, and should finish by spring of 2028.
Initially, expect three months with no traffic changes. After that, expect narrow lanes on the A46 and B4082. They will lower the speed limit to 40mph. This will last for about a year and a half. Expect full road closures on the A46, connecting to Walsgrave, which includes the B-road.
It involves the road between Binley roundabout and the M69 junction. These closures happen only overnight and on weekends. Specifically, it’s from 8 PM to 6 AM. Detours will guide drivers through main roads.
These are planned to be 6-7km, travelling via Hinckley Road and Clifford Bridge Road. They finish at the A428 Brandon Road. Details may still change, and lane closures should minimize disruption.
The traffic plan can still change. National Highways will update it every six months. The entire project should take 22 months. The updated route will open to the public in 2028. You can view the plans online, using reference PL/2025/0000093/CDCO.
