Retired professors donate two homes to The Wallich. They aim to combat homelessness in Swansea, Wales.

These retired professors met on a dating site. Valerie was a materials engineer and became a novelist. Chris is a philosopher-poet and has published much work.
Valerie spoke about their reasons, saying homeless people need a lot of assistance. They sold two houses, one each, and bought one. Then, they decided to buy for those in desperate need after seeing The Wallich’s CEO on TV.
The gift helps those needing shelter immediately. They stay there briefly in Swansea, then move to permanent housing.
Valerie said they could spend less on some things, noting they are comfortable, but not super rich. So, they skipped things like world travel. Chris and Valerie focused on the houses, but still enjoy life’s simple pleasures.
They first leased the homes to the charity, and now they have fully donated the properties. Valerie said the lease gave them a safe test, and they knew they don’t need the security. Their four kids and nine grandkids will get other things.
The Wallich felt very grateful. Mike Bobbett said one house donation is amazing, and two houses are beyond belief. He thinks Valerie and Chris are great people, and their kindness sets a fantastic example for everyone.
They will prepare the houses to help people in Swansea. More than 11,000 people live in temporary places in Wales, and it is hard to find long-term places for them. Meeting basic needs is increasingly difficult. They will work locally to maximize this resource and hope others will help end Wales’ homelessness.
