A man is now in police custody, after someone reported a weapon fired at a car last night in Cottingham.

Five young people, between 16 and 21 years old, were inside the car when it stopped on Westfield Road. Luckily, nobody got hurt during this event.

Humberside Police are investigating the scene, and Westfield Road stayed closed today, affecting traffic in both directions. Police say they arrested a man in connection with the incident.

Around 9:10 pm, police received a call saying someone shot at a car containing five people checking directions on Westfield Road. The caller reported a man came from a property and fired a shot.

The car’s occupants ran to safety nearby, and armed officers quickly arrived at the scene. When officers arrived, they heard more shots.

Thankfully, nobody suffered injuries. Police arrested a 68-year-old man immediately, and he is currently still in police custody.

Police understand this incident will worry people, so the neighborhood team will be in Cottingham to offer reassurance to local residents. If you’re worried, talk to officers.

Officers remain at the scene exploring all possible explanations. They are searching to find the weapon used, and they also want to know the full story.

Road closures are still in place for safety. Westfield Road is closed between Beverley Road and Riplingham Road.

Police ask for help from the public. If you have information about what happened last night, please contact the police using the non-emergency 101 number, and quote log 503 of February 12th.

Eppleworth Dog Exercise Park, in a post on their Facebook page, said despite an incident somewhere nearby overnight causing the road to be closed, you can still bring your dogs from Cottingham to the park. The park’s first gate will be in use today only, located before the red barn, near the farm selling eggs.
