Lacey Lake, 24, died in Plymouth. Her grandmother remembers her life at a packed Cornwall funeral service.

Lacey’s funeral was February 10 at Paul Parish Church, near Penzance. Her grandma, Rosemary French, said it was “wonderful.” The first song was Lauren Spencer Smith’s “Flowers,” and people remembered Lacey’s life during Freya Ridings’ “Lost Without You.” The crowd sang “The Old Rugged Cross.”
Her brother, Tom, read a loving poem and said she left too soon. Her sister, Brooke, also shared words. “Forever Young” by Becky Hill played as people left.
Afterward, a reception took place at The Lugger Inn. Lacey’s mom died young at age 26 from sepsis, but doctors misdiagnosed it. Rosemary raised Lacey and her siblings. Lacey was only 18 months old.
Rosemary remembers Lacey’s diabetes diagnosis. She had to get shots daily and do finger pricks. It was very tough for her, and Rosemary said she thought she was “invincible.” Lacey wanted to live like her friends.
Rosemary moved to Cornwall from northern England. Later, Lacey also moved there. Many people traveled for the funeral, and her brother’s poem was beautiful. Lacey will be cremated, and her ashes will rest with her mother.
Rosemary wonders why police viewed Lacey as medium risk because high risk would have meant a faster search. Police have Lacey’s phone now. An inquest will hopefully reveal what happened.
On March 7, they will bury Lacey’s ashes as it’s the anniversary of her mom’s death. Rosemary misses Lacey very much. It is very hard to lose a child, and Lacey was her granddaughter, but she raised her.
