Penny Dinners is a vital service in Cork. They feed families who are facing hardship. They have done this for nearly 150 years. Recently, they received a great boost. They got a share of a huge donation of €500,000 from daa, raised by staff and customers at Cork and Dublin airports.

This money is split between three charities: Penny Dinners, Clíona’s Foundation (which helps children in Limerick), and A Little Lifetime Foundation (which aids bereaved parents). Each charity received €166,666, which will greatly help their work. Caitríona Twomey, who runs the Penny Dinners kitchen, said the money will buy essential supplies, calling it a magical day and expressing amazement at the amount raised.

They are very thankful for all the help because it means so much to them. Penny Dinners’ motto, “We never judge, we serve,” guides their work. They provide food and clothes to people, as well as helping the homeless in Cork. They welcome people seven days a week, all year round.

They now operate from a new building on James Street, the Caitríona Twomey Wellness Centre, which has training and mental health facilities, along with space for arts workshops. Their old building on Little Hanover Street is being fixed up and is expected to reopen soon. Employees at daa chose these charities as part of their 2024 charity program.

Daa employees and passengers raised €250,000, which daa then matched through their new Charity Programme. Kenny Jacobs, the CEO of daa, praised the efforts of everyone involved, saying passengers and employees made a significant impact.

He appreciates being part of an organization that helps others and is thankful for everyone’s generosity. Each year, employees nominate charities, and Daa matches the funds raised for them during the year. The program includes many fundraising events at Cork and Dublin airports. All money goes to the charities. Since 2007, they have raised €4.2 million, helping various causes like health and community support.
