Fitzgerald’s Park gets a self cleaning toilet. It is the first of multiple planned to increase public access.

These special toilets are common in Europe; Paris uses them a lot. They are cleaner than regular toilets because sensors check for people inside first. Then, disinfectant sprays the whole area, and the door locks during the cleaning, which takes under two minutes.
The City Council spoke about the toilet and thanked parks and recreation workers. More toilets may come later; councillors want fifteen new loos over the next few years, aiming for three each year for five years.
A council meeting discussed this plan, and someone mentioned an incident this summer, where an older tourist had an accident because he could not discover a toilet. They also listed problems with toilet signs. One toilet is on Grand Parade, but many people do not see it, as the library is near the hidden toilet and a small sign shows its hours.
