Connswater Shopping Centre in Belfast closes March 21, impacting renters and the East Belfast community after 20 years.

The center opened in 1983 and expanded over the years. A retail park was built nearby, which will remain open along with The Range store.
BDO NI’s Michael Jennings and Brian Murphy are receivers. They informed renters of the impending closure, providing them with two weeks’ notice.
Michael Jennings stated they assessed everything and sadly, they must close the center. BDO will assist the renters in relocating, seek future uses for the property, and attempt to sell it.
A center spokeswoman cited difficult times and the significant changes occurring in the retail sector. They recently lost major stores and appointed BDO as receivers.
The spokeswoman expressed gratitude to customers, renters, and staff, acknowledging their support over the years and valuing the community’s spirit. The center’s ownership has lasted for 20 years.
The spokeswoman understands the disappointment this decision causes, emphasizing that the center was important to East Belfast and expressing deep regret.
CBRE NI manages Connswater. A spokesperson confirmed the closure is disappointing, clarifying that The Retail Park, Range, and Lidl will remain open and fully operational.
Gavin Robinson MP pledged to assist those affected, considering this closure a sad day. The center has been a community hub for years, and this loss will be deeply felt.
He acknowledged those facing job losses, noting the center’s visible decline lately. He stressed that the site must still contribute to the community, as it is important to the Newtownards Road area.
He and his colleagues will engage in discussions with the owners. They aim to provide support to anyone impacted by the closure, offering any assistance they can.
