Residents report a ‘toxic’ smell causes illness in children. An investigation is urged to address health concerns.

People in Merseyside say their area is ‘toxic.’ Kids feel sick, residents report a bad smell, like ‘rotten eggs,’ lingers, and they worry about health effects a lot.
The Simonswood Industrial Estate causes issues. People complained about dust last year and there was a ‘mysterious rotten egg smell’. Residents got really frustrated back then.
Neil Dunne feels trapped because of the odor. He’s part of the Simonswood Action Campaign Group and says everything smells like ‘rotting flesh’ badly. Dunne says it feels dangerous and that their health is at risk.
Jade is a worried mom in Kirkby. She fears effects on her young children a lot and thinks the smell makes them feel sick. She wonders about long-term consequences.
Jade says her kids say the smell makes them ill, describing it as smelling like a sewer, really strong. The smell hits hard when doors open and burns eyes and nose, really badly. The smell lingers for minutes or hours, sometimes lasting a whole day.
Jade contacted the Environment Agency and others reported the smell too. No one hears back on actions taken and they don’t know if anyone is working on it.
Waste storage was refused at the site again. The site falls under Lancashire County Council while Knowsley Council reports on behalf of residents. The bad smell drifts into Kirkby often.
Cllr Tony Brennan wants the Agency to act, saying Knowsley would act if they could. Brennan is frustrated by lack of response, saying concerns were highlighted for years, impacting residents seriously, and that they fight new problems on site.
The Agency monitored air for 12 months, studying concerns about dust levels. They found no dust issues linked to the site. The Agency has been contacted for comments.
