Chelsea Man Accused of Stabbing and Strangling Housekeeper
The court also heard that Bourne’s mental health made him unfit for a standard trial. A jury will be tasked with deciding if he committed the act, but not to determine guilt.
Bourne and Nascimento were living alone in the house, as his mother was traveling abroad. This arrangement existed for three months prior to the attack.
Nascimento testified in court about the incident. She recounted that Bourne asked her to come outside and then began attacking her with a knife, initially without saying anything.
He allegedly stabbed her blouse repeatedly, and she used the blouse to try and stop the bleeding. Bourne then strangled her with his hands, but Nascimento managed to escape his grasp.
She locked herself in a bathroom and called a friend for help, fearing that she was dying. Trying to breathe quietly, she hoped Bourne would think she was dead, but sadly, he told her to open the door.
Nascimento pleaded with him to stop and told him about her daughter. She said Bourne called her evil during the attack, despite them never arguing. She added that he had acted strangely before, sleeping on the bathroom floor and talking to himself.
After the attack, Bourne called 999, identifying himself and stating he stabbed a “demon woman” in his house. He asked them not to bring a gun and admitted he had blood all over him.
The judge explained the trial’s unusual nature to the jurors, noting Bourne’s mental state makes him unfit for a normal proceeding. He will not be present in court during the trial. The jury will determine if he committed the alleged act. They won’t issue a typical guilty or not guilty verdict, as the trial is ongoing.
