Chelmsford Car Park Faces Closure After Housing Conversions Elsewhere
Rectory Lane East car park will become housing. Seventy-four spaces turn into twenty-two apartments. These apartments include parking and landscaping amenities. The council agreed to this in October 2024. Glebe Road car park will have twelve homes. That agreement happened in April 2023.
Waterhouse Lane options are now under review. This could remove eighty-six parking spaces. The council is reviewing its parking strategy too, and they will discuss it in private on March 10.
Stephen Robinson leads Chelmsford City Council. He could not discuss details on Waterhouse Lane. He said parking needs will change downtown. The new Beaulieu station impacts parking.
The new station has three platforms. A bus interchange will serve local routes. This station includes parking for over seven hundred cars. The station opens this autumn. He thinks people will use the new station instead of downtown.
The council runs the new station’s car park. Plans already assume parking shifts there. Some downtown Chelmsford parking will move.
The council decides on Waterhouse Lane’s future use. They will decide this in a private meeting on March 11.
