Bargain Hunt star Charles Hanson expressed regret in a letter about pushing his wife, during his ongoing trial.

The Bargain Hunt star denied assaulting his wife. He claimed he only tapped her shoulder, stating bad language prompted the tap. The incident happened in May 2023, and the trial occurred at Derby Crown Court.
Hanson, 46, lives on Ashbourne Road in Mackworth Village. He faces charges of violence against his wife, with the alleged violence spanning ten years. He denies controlling behavior and assault, and he was arrested in June 2023 in Quarndon.
Stephen Kemp, the prosecutor, spoke of Hanson’s letter sent to the police officer. In it, Hanson questioned his wife’s reliability and expressed concerns about her mental health. The letter mentioned an incident in May 2023.
Hanson said his wife was watching TikTok in bed when he asked for her help. He claimed she yelled a swear word at him three times. He admitted pushing her shoulder slightly due to her bad language, and he regrets the incident. He claims it wasn’t domestic abuse.
Hanson said his wife flailed her arms around. He said “double push” sounded worse than it was, describing it as a “double tap.” He insisted he never pushed his wife strictly but tapped her to stop the bad language.
He tapped again when he asked her if she was okay because he wanted her attention and did not want to scare her. Kemp suggested the alleged assault changed things. Hanson claimed his wife was “mentally awol” and denied any assault.
He thought his wife’s behavior was unreasonable and described her arm movements as bewildering. He worried about her well-being because he did not think she was well.
Messages were read in court where Mrs. Hanson wrote, “don’t chuck your wife around.” Kemp suggested she meant he acted that way often. Hanson said he only tapped her shoulder and never “chucked” her around.
Hanson said he was a “fool” and thought she controlled him. He was asked why his wife might lie, as divorce proceedings are underway. He hoped for love to save the marriage, and they even went to therapy.
He believes his wife never loved him truly and that she wanted out of the marriage. He claims she exaggerated and lied to achieve this. The trial is still ongoing.
