A Nottingham bar seeks to rent unused council land for outdoor seating, frustrated by slow progress despite agreed fees.

The bike shed closed in December 2024 and was moved to Sherwood. Industry Bar opened in May 2023, and since then, they have wanted the space for more outdoor tables.
Steve Williams, co-owner of the bar, said it is the city’s entrance. He has been in talks with the council for 18 months, and the bike shed’s removal helps. He is still talking to the council, but progress is slow.
They have already agreed on a rental fee. The council needs money and is selling property, and the land is currently unused. The bar tries to keep it tidy, even though they can’t even jet wash it.
The bar offered to buy or rent the land, as it is only useful to them. The council loses potential rental income and could benefit from accepting the bar’s money.
Industry Bar currently has five outdoor tables. They want permanent, wooden tables and designed a concept the council liked, featuring tables, chairs, and heaters. In winter, they might theme it as a ski lodge.
Williams believes it would improve the area. It would be nice for locals and tourists and would boost Carrington Street’s overall feel.
Nottingham City Council is selling land to generate income after bankruptcy. They have raised money by auctioning assets, including a car park and industrial units.
Williams understands the council’s situation. Many departments, including property and highways, must agree on the land. He created an email group for everyone, but the process has not moved forward.
