St David’s Hall in Cardiff has been shut. This popular music venue closed in September 2023. The roof contains a specific type of concrete, called reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC). RAAC can unexpectedly fail as it gets older.

Academy Music Group (AMG) will run St David’s Hall, and they operate many music venues in the UK. The reopening has been delayed before, but they now expect to reopen it in late 2026.

Councilor Huw Thomas says they are making good progress and wants it ready for the 2027 Cardiff Singer event. They aim to open then. They submitted planning applications for roof work.

One application asks to remove the existing lead, replacing it with zinc panels. This new system mimics traditional styles.

Councilor Rodney Berman asked about project delays and questioned the council’s cabinet member, Jennifer Burke. He said the economy committee awaits an update concerning remediation work.

Councilor Burke stated officers work with AMG closely and expressed frustration with the delays. Costs rose due to extensive RAAC. AMG’s board approved cost increases internally. She will share updates when possible.
