Police officers rescued tourists from a burning building in Camden. Nine officers were hospitalized.

Police showed up and saw thick smoke filling the basement and rising to other floors. Before fire crews arrived, they went in and found people trapped in smoky rooms, seeming confused.
Sergeant Pete Day fought the fire, using fire extinguishers to put it out. Constable Luke Uzzell forced doors open to ensure no one remained trapped. Uzzell shouted “Come to my voice!” and guests ran from danger.
Clips show Uzzell banging on doors, yelling, “Police! Everyone out!” Commander Peter Stevens praised the officers, saying Met officers risk their lives daily to protect people and communities. These officers showed excellence.
Stevens said they acted without thinking of themselves, stepping into danger bravely. He is glad no one got seriously hurt and credits the officers’ heroic actions for preventing more harm.
