Cambridge South station will open in 2026. They planned to open it this year originally. Network Rail said two things caused the delay: Cambridge’s re-signalling and train timetable updates.

Network Rail needs to upgrade signalling equipment, but the upgrade won’t finish before 2026. Great Northern and Thameslink use the East Coast Main Line, where a new timetable starts in December 2025. Trains go from London to Cambridge.

Network Rail sent a letter to local people, stating the timetable is essential because it allows trains using Cambridge South to operate. The letter mentioned the timetable and the upgrade project, which both affected the station opening plans.

Both the timetable update and upgrade must happen on time to open the station in early 2026. It’s later than expected, but the upgrades will help the area a lot. The biomedical campus needs it, and the community needs it, too.

They started building Cambridge South in January 2023 after the government approved it in December 2022. The letter about the delay says building is going well, and construction is progressing nicely so far.

The West Anglia line closed for almost two weeks around Christmas time in twenty twenty-four. They installed a second footbridge during this closure, and Shepreth Branch Junction was also rebuilt, allowing trains to go faster through there. Specifically, the speed increased to 50 mph.
