Cambridge council leader and deputy resign after facing immense challenges. A new leader will be elected soon.

Davey has led the council since 2023. Gilderdale served four years as a city councillor. The Labour Party will pick a new leader soon, and they plan to vote on May 11.
Davey and Gilderdale said leading the council was rewarding. They enjoyed working with their team, which cared deeply for the community, and they felt they helped Cambridge.
They guided the city through tough times, including helping residents during financial struggles. They managed growth, housing, water, and climate issues. They also reviewed the council’s rules and transformed programs.
They tackled talks about devolution openly, and they faced financial stress from funding cuts while service demands increased. They are proud of many achievements, including making new council homes and community centers, and investing in services.
Being a councillor demands great commitment; it requires time, money and effort. They had resources to dedicate, but after two years, they decided to move on, allowing others to now take on those responsibilities.
They thank their executive councillor team and will focus on a smooth handover. New leaders will be elected in May, and they appreciate the support they got and will keep fighting for equality.
Davey wants to focus on his family and councillor duties. Gilderdale will move to London after 27 years in Cambridge. She hopes for the best and wishes well to East Chesterton residents.
A city council election is coming for East Chesterton, which will happen with county and mayoral elections. The elections are set for May 1.
