Council tax increase is expected. Street lighting may dim. Car park charges could be introduced to balance the budget.

The council faced a big financial gap of almost £20 million. Government funding helped reduce it to about £6 million. Council tax will likely increase, and other changes will cost residents more.
Council tax could rise by five percent, adding £125 yearly for some homes. Some street lights could dim by half after midnight on about 500 roads. Important spots like major junctions, town centers, banks, and busy night areas are exempt from dimming.
The council eyes car park charges to raise money. They are looking at a £2 charge at 40 free car parks. The plan affects several towns, including Prestwich, Radcliffe, Whitefield, Tottington, and Ramsbottom, to keep the towns lively.
Parking permit fees are going up too. These permits are for residents who park near town centers, hospitals, and Metrolink stations. The annual fee rises to £45; it used to be £35. Visitor permits will now cost £25 a year; they used to be free.
Council leader Eamonn O’Brien spoke, stating that finances are better than expected, but they still face challenges. Many other councils face similar issues with rising service demand, especially in social care, where most council money already goes.
The council will vote on these plans soon. The budget vote is on February 19 at a town hall meeting.
