A bungling burglar got stuck in a store ceiling while trying to escape after stealing scratchcards and other items.

Sainsbury’s staff arrived at 6 am. They saw legs dangling from a hole. The staff then called the police immediately. Police arrested Steven McMahon.
He broke through the ceiling to enter, causing plaster and dust to fall everywhere. The 50-year-old got stuck.
He kicked his legs wildly to get free, and groceries fell off a shelf nearby. He eventually freed himself, stealing scratchcards, crisps, detergent, and other food items.
He fled through the fire exit. Police found McMahon nearby. Nottinghamshire Police got there fast, arriving within six minutes.
He wore a tracksuit. They arrested and jailed him quickly. He pleaded guilty to burglary and received 22 weeks in jail.
Inspector Liz Gaskin spoke about the arrest, praising the officers’ quick response. She thanked the store staff for calling, noting that the store was closed during the break-in.

Shoplifting and theft from people drove this increase. Knife offenses and robberies also rose somewhat. Businesses spend a lot to reduce theft.
They use CCTV and security guards. The British Retail Consortium says shoplifting is out of hand. They report over 2,000 incidents daily.
