Clare Street closes for five months as the Celebration Mile project nears completion, aiming for a summer finish.

The town got £9m for this project and Sedgemoor District Council approved plans in 2022. Work started on Eastover in August 2024. Angel Crescent got improvements in November 2024, right after the Bridgwater Carnival.
Clare Street work starts February 17. Taylor Woodrow wants to finish by summer but will close Clare Street for five months. People can still walk and shop there.
They will fix utilities and drainage, with new kerbs and paving also planned. Street furniture and plants will improve things. The goal is to get more people downtown, making it nicer for everyone.
Mike Rigby wants work done fast, so businesses should benefit quickly. The road closure helps speed things up, but people can still access Clare Street; signs will show shops are open.
The town deal funds must be used by March 2026, or the money goes back. Some sections are already finished, including the route from Northgate Docks. The A38 Broadway junction finished in July 2023.
Salmon Parade work is delayed a bit, awaiting the new health academy, for which they got £19.7m.
The route from Broadway to the train station isn’t part of this project. Mick Lerry thinks more money might come, potentially with the new ‘gigafactory’ near the Gravity zone.
Besides the £9m, £5.2m goes to Northgate Docks. They will spend £4.2m fixing the docks, adding moorings and leisure space. Another £1m improves walking and biking there, with a new bridge planned near the canal.
