On May 17, 2024, four men were together at a house on Slade Lane. They talked, drank, and smoked in the kitchen for a couple of hours before they started arguing.
During the argument, Hibbert threatened to stab a man. The others tried to calm him down, but Hibbert moved toward the victim. Then he stabbed him with a kitchen knife.
Police received a call about a stabbing at 6:15 p.m. on Slade Lane in Longsight. Hibbert ran away from the scene as police and paramedics arrived. They found a man in his twenties with a stab wound in his chest.
The injured man was quickly taken to the hospital in critical condition. His condition later improved, and he became stable.
Hibbert was on the run for a little over a month, prompting an intensified search. Police wanted Hibbert because of collected evidence. He was arrested after a car stop by the Tactical Vehicle Interception Unit (TVIU), who received a tip about him traveling in a car.
Greater Manchester Police tracked Hibbert and surprised him during the arrest to prevent further harm. Akeam Hibbert is 25 years old.
Hibbert was initially charged with attempted murder but pleaded guilty to a lesser charge: a Section 18 assault. The police accepted this plea. A police detective, Patrick Winstanley, spoke, noting their hard work towards justice and the victim’s recovery.
Winstanley emphasized that it was a team effort. They secured crucial evidence in Longsight, ensuring Hibbert was held responsible. He added that knife crime is a problem, and the police aim to reduce knives on the streets by educating people about weapon dangers and ensuring those who cause harm will face punishment.
