Birmingham tops the list outside London with 3,220 thefts per 100,000 vehicles. See which other UK cities face high car theft rates.

Manchester, Leeds, and Sheffield followed behind Birmingham. They had the next highest numbers of stolen cars. Smethwick, West Bromwich, Bilston, and Willenhall also had issues. These places were on a list of car crime hotspots.
Barking, in East London, topped the whole UK list. They had about 648 cars stolen per 100,000 vehicles! Toyota was the most stolen car brand there. Thieves took about 25 of them.
The DVLA says around 61,343 cars were stolen last year. That’s the third-highest number in ten years. Car theft in 2024 doubled since 2015. Insurance claims for motor issues reached £11.7 billion.
Several other towns seem to have theft problems too. Hayes, Thornton Heath, and Dagenham are on the list. London, Enfield and Ilford had plenty of thefts. Beckenham and West Wickham also made the top twenty. Police will probably work hard and investigate this issue.
