Birmingham Bin Strike Divides Opinion: Should Workers Take Action?

Birmingham’s bin strike causes problems. Trash is piling up. People are getting angry and worried.

Bin workers started a big strike because of their disagreement with the council about job cuts. The city will see more disruption soon, bin collections are affected on February 12.

Union members are striking for days; the action lasts twelve days this February and they will walk out for thirteen days next month. Some residents complain about waste. Giant rats are near the piles, and streets have stinky dumps.

The strike exists now, and its effects show in many areas. Birmingham City Council made a choice to remove a certain job; the Waste Recycling officer role.

The role connects to equal pay claims. Other workers made the claims against the council, and scrapping the job may prevent future lawsuits. The union thinks differently about the role; they say it protects people.

Workers could lose money, the pay cut could equal £8,000. This impacts 150 long-term workers, and they worry about more service cuts.

Here are the strike dates: February 12, 14, 17, 18, 20, 25, 26, and 27. March 3, 4, 6, 10, 12, 14, 17, 18, 21, 25, 26, 28, and 31. April 2 and 4.
